By Frank Mbunda

Over 60 first year students enrolled at Tumaini University have been expelled following mass failure of examinations.
The Chancellor of Tumaini University, Prof. Geofrey Mmari, said yesterday that at least 76 students out of 120 first year law students had been expelled due to various reasons, including absenteeism and examination failure.

Prof. Mmari said some students had not attended lectures for almost the whole year.

He explained however, that the university senate was scheduled to meet on October 17 to discuss the fate of the students.

’’The senate would determine whether to expel those students or to look for alternative means of assisting them to attain the required academic standard,’’ he said.

In an interview with the Sunday Observer, Prof. Mmari said that if they were not satisfied with the decision of the university administration, the affected students had a right of appeal to higher authorities.

The don said the university administration knew that some students did not attend academic functions but engaged in non-academic affairs. Such students, he pointed out, had to suffer such an outcome.

The affected students said they were planning to file a notice of appeal to the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Peter Msolla.

All the dismissed students who had been taking Bachelor of Law degree courses (LLB), said that they would request Prof. Msolla to intervene in the matter.

They also want the government to form a special committee to probe their complaints and establish the basic reasons for the frequent dismissal students from the institution.
