The National Festivals and State Celebrations steering committee has raised more than 300m/- out of the 1.2bn/- urgently needed for this years independence day celebrations next month.
Some of the money represent direct contributions by local business people, and part of the sum was in the form of pledges.
Prime Minister Edward Lowassa presided over the fund-raising drive in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
Earlier, the premier told the local business people who attended the event that the steering committee had set the amount needed at 34m/-, which turned out to be a big under-estimate.
Lowassa explained that the steering committee chairman Vincent Mrisho and his team reviewed the budget, and came up with a realistic figure of 1.2bn/- required for the preparations.
Prime Minister Lowassa appealed to the business people to make further contributions to meet the revised target.
Those who made new pledges were TOYOTA Tanzania company that pledged 75m/-, while the IPP Executive Chairman Reginald Mengi, pledged to supply Kilimanjaro drinking water manufactured by the Moshi-based Bonite Bottlers Limited, for 4,000 youth who will participate in the celebrations.
Others were NMB ( 20m/-), TIOT (10m/-), CRDB ( an additional 10m/-) and Abood Bus which promised to part with some 10m/-.
African Media Groups Franco Tramontano pledged 4m/=.
