The hunt for role model executives starts

This year’s most respected company and chief executive officers are to be known next month at the culmination of a rigorous survey of who did better than others this year in the entire East African Community (EAC) bloc.

The 7th round survey that intends to harmonise business and entrepreneurship promotion in the ambitious EAC involved 100 companies from each of the three countries will release the winners on December 4, this year, according to Leonard Mususa, a senior officer of the PriceWaterHouseCoopers (PWC) - country office.

”The survey for 2006 has actually been completed. As we speak now, researchers are summarising the results.

We expect by December 2, they will be ready for announcement at a ceremony planned for Nairobi, Kenya,” Mususa, who is partner-assurance and business advisory services, told the Sunday Observer in an interview this week.

Speaking on the rationale of the survey, Mususa said it has acted as a catalyst of business growth among operators in every sector involved throughout the region.

He said, as of now, no sector was being sidelined. The survey covers hotel business, service companies, fuel companies, financial, tourism to Information, Communication and Technology (ICT), just to mention a few.

Mususa ruled out claims that the survey was Kenyan-oriented as it has been claimed by some individuals from Tanzania and Uganda.

”That one has no grain of truth. The fact is that, most of the top winners coming from Kenya cannot justify the fears being raised. Let us not forget the fact that Kenya still enjoys a big share of strong private sector than Tanzania or Uganda.

Last year Kenya Airways (KQ) toppled giant East African Breweries to emerge winner of the number one position in the 6th PWC’s most respected companies’ survey.

East African Breweries had won the award for five consecutive years since inception of the awards.

In a new country category of awards, KQ also emerged the most respected company in Kenya, with Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) and MTN taking the honour in Tanzania and Uganda respectively.

According to Mususa, normally, the companies attracting the strongest respect are those that continue to perform well, financially, maintain steady growth and increase market share.
