Local journalists have been urged to take up the challenges posed by globalisation, which promote foreign cultural values at the expense of traditional ones.

The challenge was given in Dar es Salaam yesterday by the Deputy Minister for Information, Culture and Sports, Daniel Nsanzugwanko.

The minister said the developed world uses globalisation to spread its cultural values through the power of its media which has a great impact on local cultural values.

The Deputy Minister was speaking at the venue during which recognition awards were given to journalists, media houses and other stakeholders who championed the spread of local cultural values and exposed negative traditional ones within local ethnic societies.

Among the strategies are to make artistes use their work, such as sculptures, music and threatre arts as a source of income and thus a weapon against poverty.

The works can also be used to enhance peace, love, unity and patriotism within the society, as well as to educate the society on a variety of issues, including politics and the economy.

Four Journalists and several media houses and other institutions and individuals were given the awards, under the auspices of the Cultural and Arts Journalists Association (CAJA).

The recipients were Peter Shardrack, Emmanuel Herman, Saleh Ally and Seif Mangwangi.

The Guardian Limited was among the media houses presented with a Certificate of Recognition .
