Police holding Iringa man over trophies

The Police Force, in collaboration with the Anti- Poaching Squad has intercepted various government trophies in the on-going crackdown against poaching in Iringa Region.

Speaking at a news conference here on Friday, the Acting Regional Police Commander, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Holiday Kyejo, said that during the operation, a number of trophies were recovered.

SSP Kyejo said trophies confiscated from one suspect included a horn of a sable antelope, two horns of bushbuck, a bag of bushbuck skin, two teeth of a warthog, a bone of a python and the nose of a warthog.

She identified the suspect as Fedelisi Mhiche (66), a resident of Idete village in Kilolo District and said the trophies were found hidden in his home.

The acting RPC said the suspect, who had been using the items as accessories in witchcraft, was arrested on May 9, 2007 and will appear in court soon.

In another development, two people died on the spot and three others were injured seriously after a lorry in which they were travelling had a tyre burst and overturned in Njombe District.

SSP Kyejo said the incident occurred on May 10 at around 08.45 hrs near Igagala village along Njombe-Makete Road in Njombe District.

She named the deceased as Jekonia Sanga (17), a female pupil at Lupila Primary School of Makete and Efeso Mligo(25), a teacher at Lupila Secondary School.

The injured persons are Iskaka Sanga (30) a teacher at Mbaleche School, Onesmo Pius Sanga (35) a Mbeya resident, and Onesmo Mbelwa (27), a trader from Mbeya.

Kyejo said the injured persons were admitted at Kibena District Hospital in Njombe District where they are still receiving medical attention.
The vehicle involved was an Isuzu Truck that had been loaded with timber.

It belongs to Deo Sanga and was being driven by Mondi Mwilo(36) both of Tanga Region.
