By Correspondent Michael Haonga

A three-member advisory mission of the United Nations System yesterday ended its three-day advisory mission in Tanzania, floating a number of recommendations on how the country can create several jobs as one of the effective ways of alleviating poverty.

Among its recommendations is for Tanzania to include the component of job creation in its National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty (MKUKUTA) for Tanzanian Mainland and its Isles version, MKUZA.

The mission said it was important for inclusion of the job creation component in the national strategy and that the UN system had responded to give its support following recent request by President Jakaya Kikwete when launching the ILO permanent home office building in Dar es Salaam for the East African Sub-region.

Speaking at a press conference at the ILO East Africa Sub-region office in Dar es Salaam at the end of the visit, the ILO Geneva Executive Director for the Employment Sector, Jose Salazar-Xirimachs, noted that the UN System has been working with the Government of Tanzania for a long time.

He pointed out however that following new reform developments for the body to deliver as one entity, they had come to review the policy framework on how it can render support, to make recommendations on the new employment creation programme and on how the UN system can support the drive to that end.

Other members included Selim Jahan who is the Senior Advisor and Cluster Leader on Strategies and Policies for Poverty reduction Poverty Group in the UNDP New York and the ILO East Africa Sub-region Director, Jurgen Schwettan.

During their three day mission they met the ILO Social Partners (Government, Employers and Workers) representatives before meeting President Jakaya Kikwete yesterday to cap up their mission.

They commended Tanzania for its exemplary role in coming up with the declaration of creating a million jobs within a specified span of time and charging every sector to come up with its plan on how to implement the national goal.
