20 perish in gruesome collision

A grisly road accident cut short lives of 20 passengers on board when their Toyota Hiace mini-bus collided with a truck at Meserani sub-location in Monduli in Northern Tanzania`s safari capital of Arusha yesterday afternoon.
Police reports say the truck with registration number T-377 AGM loaded with sand hit the mini-bus bearing registration number T-776 ARH, killing 19 commuters on the spot including the mini-bus driver.
Another passenger who was rushed to Mount Meru Hospital for treatment immediately after the accident, which occurred around 1:30 pm, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
According to the Arusha Regional Police Commander, Basilio Matei the commuter bus was heading for Arusha town from Monduli, while the truck was on the way to Monduli.
He said the driver of Isuzu truck was overtaking a saloon car, when he hit the on-coming passenger bus.
Victim`s names revealed
The deceased were identified as we went to press and included:
Musee Kimaetare (26) (Meserani),Tumaini Merinyo (Lesiraa), Shazda Juma (21) (Monduli), Sebastian Sakaya (25) (Monduli), Stambuli Nyovela, a watchman of Sopa Lodge, Msele Kimaro (34), the ill-fated Toyota Hiace driver Jimila Juma and his conductor identified as Asifiwe.
Others are Lomnyaki Meng`oriki (50) Amina (Beatrice) (30) both residents of duka bovu, Mrs Mkumbo of Tanzania Military Academy in Monduli (TMA), Nakwetu Meng`oriki (55), George Nshauri, Elibariki Mnzava and Mrs Mwenti of Monduli.
