HIV test certificates essential

As the national campaign on voluntary HIV/Aids testing picks momentum after its launching by President Kikwete last week, some quarters in Dar es Salaam are suggesting the tests to be one of the conditions for recruitment or employment.

They say production of a certificate of the test as a condition for employment can generate a more positive response to the campaign which is slotted to end on the International Aids Day this December.

A student at Alpha High School in the city, Edwin Edward, is challenging fellow students to go for the tests, saying: ``Most of the HIV/Aids victims are youths. Let us respond to the challenge and let our teachers stand by our sides.``

About four million Tanzanians are expected to undergo the tests against the anticipated two million HIV/Aids infected population currently, of whom only 165,000 people are registered with half the number using antiretroviral drugs.

The rate of HIV/Aids infection in the country stands at 7.7 per cent for women and 6.3 per cent for men.
