Maasai happy with city life

City life exposes Maasai to further their worldly knowledge as it contrasts with the life in their places of origin, according to Lekorti Paulo, Orongait Oleparkipany and Leiba Moono, who added: ``It is satisfying.``

The trio made the observation recently in a survey by The Guardian on Sunday about the changing trend of Maasai life.

Their main occupation in the city is hair plaiting and guarding properties, a fast growing fashion now in many urban centres in the country.

``I agree with the Kiswahili saying implying that urban centres are a school by themselves as it proves in real terms.

We are learning many things here, ``Lekorti remarked, adding: ``Town life teaches the aspects to your survival.

If you do not struggle you end up suffering, entirely different to our villages where you can lazy around but live at the expense of the toiling family members.

``Orongait conceded: ``Sometimes we are confronted with language barriers, low pay and brutality, especially when robberies occur at places of our guard.

However, it is tolerable as we earn a living to pay for the education of our children, and of course adding cattle back home.``

Leiba added: ``From staying in the city we understand the importance of educating our children better than staying back home.``
