Residents of Vijibweni at Kigamboni peninsular in Dar es Salaam woke up one morning to a delight. Their cries for an ambulance had been answered by friends from Korea.

And together with the ambulance were an assortment of medicines and seven doctors who provided them with free medical services.

The ambulance and drugs, all worth US $40,000 (about 50m/-)were donated to the residents by a Korean Traditional Music and Dancing Group of Yeosu City during a recent visit in Tanzania.

Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Deputy Minister Cyril Chami said the Koreans were sharing experiences in cultural and economic issues with their hosts.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Young Jun Kim, said: ``This visit is just the beginning of building cultural relations.

We expect frequent visits of cultural and tradition performing groups between our two nations, hoping that this will help strengthen our relationships.`` Yeosu City is one of the contestants in hosting the 2012 World Expo whose theme will be global warming and combating environmental destruction.

Speaking during the celebration to mark the Korean Foundation Day in the city recently, Dr. Maua Daftari, the Deputy Minister for Infrastructure Development, thanked Korea on behalf of Tanzania for the assistance to the villagers of Kigamboni.
