Dar es salaam Water Supply Company (Dawasco) has yet to reconnect Mburahati orphanage to its system, alleging that people in the neighbourhood of the centre are stealing water pipes.

We are making efforts to connect water to the centre but local residents are frustrating these efforts. They steal the pipes, said Badra Masoud, the Public Relations Manager of the water utility company.

Badra said her company had made three futile attempts to get water to the centre, but each time the materials were vandalized, necessitating the company to seek the cooperation of Ubungo parliamentarian Charles Keenja in sensitizing the local populace to guard the materials.

Mburahati orphanage also cares for displaced aged people and survives through humanitarian assistance. It spends about 250,000/- a week on water alone from local dealers.
