Former African leaders vow to end HIV/Aids

Former African Heads of State and Government have declared that the fight against HIV/Aids will be fought and won with the same commitment shown in the fight against slavery, colonialism, racism and apartheid was.
They said in their declaration on Thursday after a meeting convened by the first president of Zambia, Kenneth Kaunda, at Livingstone, Zambia, that they considered themselves agents of change who needed courage and will power to succeed.
``We fought against slavery and we won. We fought against colonialism and we succeeded. And we fought against racism and apartheid and we emerged victorious.
Just as we successfully fought slavery, colonialism, racism and apartheid, we will fight HIV/Aids,`` they said in their declaration.
The declaration was made by Kaunda, former Tanzania presidents Ali Hassan Mwinyi and Benjamin Mkapa, Burundi`s Pierre Buyoya, Malawi`s Bakil Muluzi and former Secretary General of the Organization of African Unity and former Tanzania\'s Prime Minister Salim Ahmed Salim.
