Legislators lash out at witch killings

Some members of parliament here are appealing for concerted measures against traditional herbalists who are said to be the source of the growing witch killings.

The legislators offered their position at a regional consultative meeting yesterday.

Nyang`wale constituency representative James Musalika said traditional doctors were the source of killings from superstition beliefs although they are never arraigned.

``If we are really serious about putting an end to the killings we must exert pressure on these local healers.

We must first of all set the environment for meeting with them and tell them that the practice is no longer tolerable,`` he said.

Meanwhile, albinos of Mwanza region are planning to stage a demonstration against killings of their fellow disabled that have been occurring there and neighbouring Mara Region on witchcraft beliefs.

Mwanza regional Commissioner James Msekela told the consultative committee that he was approached by the albinos who told him of their plans for a major demonstration against the killings.

Msekela, however, appealed to the disabled group not to proceed with their plan as other alternative measures to contain the situation were underway.
