A Dar es Salaam based Women`s Legal Aid Centre (WLC) is facing a challenge of finding out the causes for increasing rate of divorces and separations and its impact on women.

According to the organization`s 2006 annual report factors which contribute to increased rate of marriage breakages include gender-based violence and economic disempowerment of most women. It says the HIV infection is another issue for women who opt to remain in marriage.

For the year 2006 the organization had received a total of 1,479 types of legal problems on divorce/matrimonial cases out of a total of 3,510 cases of other types of cases like domestic violence, inheritance and land disputes.

These include those in Songea (974 cases), Morogoro (118), Arusha (102), Tanga (76), Iringa (65), Shinyanga (42), Lindi (30), Kiteto (18), Moshi (12) and Mwanza (2).

According to the organization, there is a big problem of women not reporting their marriage woes to the relevant authority due to various reasons including worrying about being divorced and at times not knowing their rights.

WLAC is a voluntary legal and a community based organization that works towards protecting the rights of women and children in Tanzania.

Registered in the year 1994, it provides legal aid for enhancing women\'s\' human rights, advancing legal reforms and conducting awareness programmes on women\'s human rights among other things.
