By Thobias Mwanakatwe, PST Mbeya

Stakeholders in the transport sector in Mbeya region have urged the government to consider publicly canning careless drivers on the spot after committing a traffic offence as a way out in stopping an increase of road accidents.

The stakeholders gave this recommendation yesterday at a meeting to discuss the outcome of a research into the problem of road accidents on Tanzania mainland sponsored by SUMATRA, which had involved residents in Mbeya district council.

The Mbeya National Insurance Manager, Mr.Barton Ambangile said the number of strokes should be enhanced to stamp out the high rate of road accidents, many of which are caused by carelessness on the part of drivers who drive while under the influence of liquor.

Ambangile said Zambia was a good example, saying that it had succeeded to reduce the rate of road accidents by imposing on the spot the punishment of strokes once a driver is caught red-handed by the traffic police.
