Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume has appealed for political harmony and responsible participation in the development of the Isles as a basis for further development of the people and their institutions.

Speaking at the climax of celebrations to mark 44 years of the Zanzibar Revulution from the Amaan Stadium yesterday, President Karume said the remarkable achievements realised over the period stood testimony of the peoples’ desire to bring about their development.

He cited the economic growth of 6.1 per cent by last year as a direct result of the seriousness the people attached to their development, stressing that such spirit should now guide them to go further up.

Gross National Product at 394bn/- in 2005 went up to 512bn/- in 2006 with per capita Gross Domestic Product growing to 464,000/- ($370) from 368,000/- ($327) the previous year, he said, adding: “In the first ten months of 2007, a total of $661m was invested in 55 projects that would offer employment opportunities to over 5,000.”

In his speech the President detailed achievements in various sectors of the economy and services and asked fellow Zanzibaris to see them as the fruits of the revolution. The celebrations were also attended by national leaders, who included Union President Jakaya Kikwete.
