President Jakaya Kikwete yesterday pardoned 3,368 prisoners to mark the 44th anniversary of the union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar.
A statement released by Home Affairs Minister Lawrence Masha says the amnesty does not cover inmates serving life sentences, imprisoned on drug trafficking, corruption, armed robbery and robbery with violence, firearms or ammunitions and sexual offences.
Also excluded are those serving sentences on offences related to armed carjacking, primary school pregnancies and prison escapees.
Prisoners enjoying the presidential amnesty are those sentenced to a term of five years and have served quarter of the term, pregnant and lactating mothers at the time of entry and prisoners at terminal stages of Aids, tuberculosis and cancer.
