Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) plans to take stern action against filling stations not meeting standards to save motor vehicles from danger.
EWURA Director General Haruna Masebu told this newspaper that petrol stations have been ordered by his institution to apply for licences before those meeting specified criteria are allowed to continue with business.
``EWURA is giving up to September 30th, this year for all oil station owners to apply for new licences,`` said Masebu, stressing the move will check on operators who mixed petroleum products that could spark fires, with dire consequences to engines and consumers.
Some petrol stations in the country are said to be mixing kerosene with petrol or diesel to make super profits, and some stations are said to be operating illegally.
On escalating fuel prices, the director general said his institution was not to blame because prices were dictated by the government, adding, however, that EWURA has a budget for financial year 2008/09 for the procurement of goods and services in readiness for mobile laboratories to check fuel quality at stations.
