TBS impounds consignment of second-hand underwear in Dar

THE war against trade in second-hand underwear went a notch higher yesterday after the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) impounded a huge consignment of the product in the Kiwalani suburb of Dar e Salaam.

TBS inspector Juma Nandule said over a tonne of the banned clothes was impounded at a Royal Textiles godown.

The underwear included women’s knickers and lingerie.

Nandule said the owner of the consignment, whose value is yet to be established, had agreed to cooperate with TBS officials to ensure the consignment is destroyed at his own cost.

“We will continue searching for the banned underwear abs and also ensure that all those involved in and nab the culprits,” he said.

According to him, second-hand underwear causes skin diseases and various other diseases, saying beefed up inspections were needed to ensure the business was curtailed.
