Mlawa posted five points beating Nurdin Hassuji by half point as Kangwa William was third placed with similar points to Hasuji but with inferior tie-break points. Fourth-placed was Mustafa Ebrahim who also notched 4.5 points but weak tie-break points threw him to that position.
A total of 32 players participated and Vinay Choudry was a chief arbiter. Mlawa said he is looking forward to winning more silverwares this year and also improve his international chess (FIDE) rating.
“It feels great to emerge on top at the tournament like this one, I thank Spice Net for sponsorship and also the organizers. I would say it was one of the best event for the opening year”, he said.
Speaking at the prize presentation, Choudry thanked all the players who attended the tournament and disclosed that the next event named Rapid Chess will take place next month on 13th -14th at a place to be announced later.
“I thank all the players who come here for this event, I can happily say that we have started this year well, we will have another event next month, I ask you all to come and play”, he said.
There will be World Chess Olympiad in Azerbaijan city of Baku later this year. African qualifiers start in March. However, the Tanzania Chess Association (TCA) did not disclose if the national team will compete at the event.
Tanzania team competed at the 2014 Olympiad in Tromso, Norway where more than 174 countries featured.
