Some thoughts on Magufuli's commitment in public service

It seems that Dr. Magufuli’s administration is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in government.

President Magufuli

We must work together to ensure the public trust and establish a system of transparency, public participation and collaboration. Openness will strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness in government.

President John Pombe Joseph Magufuli is working dynamically and heartily to build a country and an economy where hard work is rewarded, value fairness, and where everyone is held accountable for what they do. Dr. Magufuli is meeting the challenges we face as a nation with a bold, comprehensive plan. And he is reimagining government to be more open, transparent, and accountable.

As vividly pointed out and demonstrated while addressing the listening intently elderly citizens of the Dar es Salaam on Saturday last month at fully packed Diamond Jubilee Hall.

Dr. Magufuli articulately expressed his well considered views on the economy that this is a make or break moment for the poor to attain the middle class status and Dr. Magufuli, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania is working to build an economy that works for everyone — where hard work and responsibility are rewarded.

Dr. Magufuli will not be satisfied until every Tanzanian who wants work can find a job. That’s why he works to grow our economy, so that nearly all households or families feel confident in their futures and their children’s futures because he assures everyone of the improvement of the education sector throughout the nation and lays emphasis on free education for all children attending primary and secondary schools.

He did not hesitate to remind the audience and stated categorically that where possible capable parents could further willfully contribute either in cash or in kind by promoting the development of education and structures or other facilities appertaining thereto, in their respective areas whenever and wherever the need be. He instantly allocated 200 million shillings exclusively for that purpose in Dar es Salaam Region schools where such problems exist at a large scale.

Tanzania’s small businesses are essential to strengthening our national economy and President Magufuli is committed to helping them grow and prosper. It is opportune to state something herein about small and medium enterprises [SMEs] since they are very important in strengthening our national economy.

And therefore, in order to help SMEs to enhance competitive strength, besides helping SMEs to upgrade and transform their businesses, we have to encourage SMEs to engage in innovation and research and development (R&D), enhance technical standards, strengthen operational and quality management, increase operational efficiency with IT, and create higher added value.

Regarding the capital financing needs of SME development, besides aggressively providing them with financing guarantees and strategic project loans, we have to arrange for them consultation and diagnostic services through financial service teams.

In order to encourage SMEs to utilize local resources and development characteristics, we have to promote projects related to the One Town One Product (OTOP); or even more products, and integrated local association tourism resources to promote the development of local characteristic industries.

Apart from helping SMEs to upgrade and transform their businesses, we should care about the development of new startups. Besides establishing an idea workshop to select great and creative ideas, we establish an incubation acceleration mechanism, combine regional industrial resources, increase local service energy, provide multifaceted and customized services with the mentor accompaniment system, and optimize the support for startup businesses, in order to shape the innovation-based core SME groups.

In order to cope with the advent of the globalization era, we will have to aggressively participate in international conferences, Trade Fairs in order to promote international cooperation for SMEs through the international trade organizations, such as the WTO, and various bilateral cooperation opportunities.

As Tanzania plays a rather important role in the WTO, and we have many years of experience and advantage in SME development, we have won the support and recognition of member economies since the early years in 1960s. It gives us more opportunities to participate in issue determination and reinforce cooperation and exchange with other member countries.

In Tanzania, more than 85 percent enterprises are SMEs. They are the cornerstones promoting economic growth and stabilizing society and employment. The vigour and tenacity they present in operation have marked out Tanzanian spirit.

At this critical moment, or juncture, of Tanzania's economic transformation and upgrade, we must continue to care about the development of SMEs and provide them assistance with government resources, in order to create a better and prosperous future for SMEs and the United Republic of Tanzania as fostered by the 5th phase government under the visionary President Dr. John Pombe Joseph Magufuli.
