5 TRC employees die in a head-on collision with train and trolley

FIVE Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) employees have died after the rescue train collided head on with a motor trolley (No HDT-3) between Mwakinyumbi and Gendagenda stations in Coast region.

A statement issued yesterday and signed by the Head of the TRC Information and Public Relations, Jamila Mbarouk said the accident occurred on a railway line between Ruvu and Mruanzi junctions.

The statement said a total of six TRC employees were involved in the accident of whom four died on the spot and two injured ones were taken to Korogwe District Hospital at Magunga for treatment.

Among the two injured employees one later died making five the number who died.

Those who lost their lives in the accident were Ramadhani Gumbo – Transport Manager for Tanga Region, Eng Fabiola Moshi – Repair Manager of Passenger coaches for Dar es Salaam Zone, Joseph Komba – Assistant Transport Manager for Dar es Salaam Zone, Philibert M. Kajuna – Expert on Rail Safety and George Urio – the driver of the motor trolley.

As we went to press the injured employee Elizabeth Bona the train controller was still receiving treatment at the hospital.

An investigation that will involve other institutions will be initiated to find out the cause of the accident.
