ACT Wazalendo picks Semu its new chairperson

​​​​​​​THE opposition ACT Wazalendo has appointed Dorothy Semu to the post of national chairperson for one year, to fill a function left by the departed Seif Sharif Hamad.

Semu was the party’s vice chairperson for the Mainland, on the basis of a statement by Salim Bimani, the party’s information and publicity secretary.

Her appointment is in accordance with Article 84 (3) and (4) of the party’s constitution of 2015 in its 2020 edition, he said, noting that in Article 84 (3) of that constitution it is provided that in the absence of party chairman then the vice-chairman who is from another side of the Union other than the chairman will fill the vacancy.

Similarly, it is provided that if the first vice-chairman is also absent, then the remaining vice-chairman shall act as chairman, the statement indicated

However, in accordance with Article 84 (4) of that constitution, Semu will hold office for a period not exceeding 12 months until a new chairman is elected by as party congress.

Maalim Seif, the Zanzibar First Vice President and ACT Wazalendo national chairman died on February 17 at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) where he was admitted on February 9.

Zanzibar is sill inseven days of mourning declared by President Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi on February 17, with Maalim Seif being laid to rest at Mtambwe in Pemba.
