A 30-year-old waiter at a Dar es Salaam hotel, Erick Francis Chilemba, has been arrested in illegal possession of a standard police uniform and a pistol.

According to the Commander of the Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone, Lazaro Mambosasa, the suspect was arrested in the city on 12 May this year and has already been arraigned in court.

"He was found in illegal possession of a police corporal uniform, handcuffs and other clothes resembling Tanzania People's Defence Forces (TPDF) uniforms," Mambosasa told a news conference yesterday.

"After a police search at the suspect’s house, an unloaded Glock 17 handgun with its serial numbers erased was also seized.”

Austrian-made Glock pistols are mostly used by armed forces and law enforcement organisations worldwide, including a majority of law enforcement agencies in the United States, according to firearm experts.

Police said Chilemba was arrested in Kinondoni District following a thorough police investigation after tip offs from Good Samaritans.

"We received information from law-abiding citizens that a certain criminal was impersonating police officers and using a gun to rob people in the city. The suspect confessed to the crime after his arrest and prosecution," he said.
