Dr Makongoro Mahanga passes on at MNH

FORMER deputy minister for Labour, Employment and Youth Development in the fifth phase administration, Dr Makongoro Mahanga (65) died yesterday at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) where he was admitted.

Until his death Dr Mahanga was Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) chairman for Ilala region. He was formerly a member of Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) in 2015.

A press statement issued by the party’s information officer for Coast Zone Lyenda Gervas said Makongoro died at 6.30 am yesterday at MNH where he was admitted since March 21, this year.

Dr Mahanga had also been Member of Parliament for the former Ukonga Constituency in Dar es Salaam for 10 years (2000 to 2010) before it was split into two – Ukonga and Segerea. In 2010 he contested for the Segerea Constituency and won but in 2015 lost it to Chadema candidate Mwita Waitara.

Dr Mahanga was the only former CCM cadre who had remained within Chadema after fellow cadres – former prime ministers Edward Lowassa and Frederick Sumaye rejoined the ruling party.

Other former prominent CCM cadres who later returned to the ruling party included former EAC secretary general Juma Mwapachu and former deputy lands minister Goodluck Ole Medeye.

ACT-Wazalendo party has conveyed condolence message to Chadema via the party’s deputy secretary of the information, mobilisation and public Relations Janeth Rithe saying Chadema has lost one its prominent cadres.

The late Milton Makongoro Mahanga was born on April 3,1955.
