According to acting Tanga regional police commander Leonce Rwegasira, the accident took place at 11.30 am and involved a Yutong-make passenger bus and a Toyota Hiace minibus.
RPC Rwegasira said the larger bus was travelling from Lushoto to Dar es Salaam while the minibus was heading to Segera from Mkata.
The five fatalities from the crash were all in the minibus, while the driver of the Lushoto-Dar es Salaam bus, Halifa Omar - a resident of Dar es Salaam – was among the six who were injured, the acting regional police chief said.
He added that the bodies of the deceased are preserved at the Korogwe District Hospital and the injured passengers are being treated at the Kabuku Health Centre in Handeni district.
Said Rwegasira: “Speeding is the likely cause of this accident as both bus drivers apparently lost control of their vehicles.”
Apart from the injured Yutong bus driver, the identities of the other casualties was yet to be established, he explained, adding that the police will make public this information once ascertained.
He further appealed to all motorists in the country to refrain from over-speeding and strive to observe all road signs.
