Govt has no plans to let TRA collect land rent

MINISTER for Lands, Housing, and Human Settlements Development William Lukuvi has said the government has no plans to use Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to collect land rent and instead the task will be done by officials of the Department of Lands.

Lukuvi issued the directive when opening a two-day training seminar on the new system of land rent collection held in Mbeya that was attended by lands and urban planning officials from all southern Highlands regions.

On the decision Lukuvi said from now on, the issue of land rent collection will be dealt with all stakeholders involved in land allocation – from urban planning officers, valuers and other land officials.

He said apart from other duties such as urban planning, surveying. And issuance of title deeds, the main duty of the land officials will be the collection of government revenue, including land rent.

According to the minister, every district in the country will have to collect land rent in full.

“We want the contribution from the land department to be discerned in the country’s GDP hence every district has the duty to collect this tax,” he said.

He also warned land officers who will be found to under assess land rent, as it is an economic sabotage offense.

The Lands ministry has also decided to terminate all eight Zonal Lands Commissioners in the country and whose activities will be taken by Regional Lands Commissioners so as to bring its services nearer to the wananchi.
