JPM renames national stadium after Mkapa

PRESIDENT John Magufuli has today renamed the national stadium in Dar es Salaam after retired President Benjamin Mkapa.

Magufuli announced this when speaking at the national funeral service at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam. He said that the late Mkapa was very instrumental in developing sports and the construction of the ultra-modern stadium with the capacity of accommodating 60,000 people at once.

According to him, Mkapa wasn’t interested to see the stadium is named after him.

“But, I found it ideal for the stadium to be named after him,” he said, adding: “I have received many messages that requested me to name the stadium that you can see in front of us after Mkapa.”

The National Stadium is among the facilities that Mkapa constructed during his regime as a president and in 2010 the stadium hosted the Brazilian National team.
