New ferry set for Kigongo-Busisi residents in Mwanza

Mwanza residents will in two months’ time start enjoying services of a new ferry courtesy of a local boat company in the region.

The construction of the new ferry that will ply between Kigongo and Busisi areas along Lake Victoria in Mwanza Region is expected to be completed in May this year.

The new 250 tonne capacity ferry has been built by the Songoro Marine Transport Boat Yard Limited at a tune of 8.9bn/. The ferry is expected to accommodate 36 vehicles and 1000 passengers at once.

Speaking during a brief to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Infrastructure who visited the ferry’s construction site, Songoro Marines’ finance manager Mohamed Salum said the ferry was expected to have started operations but delayed due to unexpected bureaucracies.

The manager cited delays in payments by the government, frequent power cuts as well as the continued rainy season as some of the reasons that delayed the completion of the project.

He however assured the parliamentary committee that the 25 percent works remaining will be completed by May and the facility handed over to the government to begin operations.
