Pangani train accident: Child dies, five injured

A PASSENGER train accident at dawn yesterday between Mkalamo and Mvave stations on a Dar es Salaam bound train starting its journey from Arusha killed one child, Hassan Lugano and injured five other people.

Jamila Mbarouk, head of public relations at the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) said in a statement that five wagons overturned and four others were derailed.

Locomotive no 9022 met with an accident at around four in the morning between Mkalamo and Mvave stations along the Dar-Arusha line in Pangani District, Tanga Region.

“The train departed Arusha at 2:30 in the afternoon on Saturday to Dar es Salaam with 14 wagons carrying 700 passengers and upon reaching Mkalamo-Mvave section, five wagons overturned causing injuries to five people – three men and two women and the death of the child,” she said.

She listed the overturned wagons as number 3614, 3527, 3605, 3526 and 3530 and derailed wagons as number 3662, 3666 and 4536 which also included the buffet car.

“Those injured were rushed to Mkalamo dispensary for treatment and were recovering, and the corporation continues with procedures to restore rail services,” the official noted.

TRC was investigating the cause of the accident for appropriate measures, she said, conveying condolences to the family of the deceased child, and praying for quick recovery of those injured.

Tanga Regional Police Commander Safia Jongo confirmed the accident and the death of the child and injuries on five people.
