Mwanza Regional Police Commander Jonathan Shanna said yesterday that the robbers were killed during a fierce exchange of fire with the police after a foiled attempt to rob traders in the area.
“Having seen a heavy security presence in Mwanza, these robbers sought to conduct house to house robberies in the island,” the RPC said.
He said following a tip off from a Good Samaritan the police made their own investigations and managed to track them through the villages of Igalla, Buhima and Bwasa in the early hours of Saturday.
“The police managed to pin five of them between Buhima and Igalla bridge at around 1AM at night,” the RPC said.
He said during the fierce exchange of fire which took at least two hours, the police managed to wound them severely with gunshots before they met their deaths.
The RPC said the police found in their possession a shotgun and its magazine, a machete, mobile phones and 16 AK47 magazines.
He said the police operation to pin down the robbers follows a tip off from a motorcycle rider, Mateso Nyagabona who narrowly escaped a motorbike jacking, and was hit with an iron bar on his left hand.
Ukerewe District Commissioner who is also the chairman of the Defence and Security Committee in the district, Colonel Lucas Magembe asked the public to unveil all visitors coming into their homes and villages by ensuring they have relevant documents from authorities.
