According to Mtwara Regional Police Commander, ACP Mark Njera, the accident was caused by the truck driver speeding along the Mtwara-Tandahimba-Newala-Masasi road before losing control of the vehicle which swerved and hit 36 people causing - 14 deaths and 22 injuries.
President Samia has asked Mtwara Regional Commissioner, Brigedia General Marco Elisha Gaguti to deliver her condolences to the agrieved families during this time of sorrow.
The President has also urged traffic authorities to fasten their efforts to limit road accidents especially at the beginning of the new year while also urging motorists to observe road safety laws.
