RC Makalla forms committee to investigate Karume Fire

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Amos Makalla, has urged traders who ran businesses at the razed Karume Market to remain calm as a committee has been formed to investigate the cause of the fire that burnt the market at dawn today.

Makalla gave the comments today, January 16, 2022 when he visited the scene of the accident and inspected the damage done.

The fire reportedly broke out at dawn and its source remained unknown by the time of our reportage.

It is said the fire destroyed a large part of the market that harbored a total of 3,500 traders with the fire brigade maximizing efforts to put out the blaze.

“I feel sorry for all traders for this accident as we have not yet known the cause of the fire and a lot of things are being said. Others are saying that the fire was caused by people who were boiling beans and left the cooking pot on so that the beans can be ready by morning. I ask you to remain calm at this time as we form a committee to investigate and establish the cause of the fire,” he said.

“We will form a committee to be led by the Ilala District Commissioner to conduct a 14-day investigation and we will receive a report and know what steps to take. During the whole investigation period, no trader is allowed to continue doing business in this area. We will look for an alternative for them,” said Makalla.
