Rights body organizes countrywide demos on Kibiti killings

FOLLOWING brutal killings of police officers and civilians in Kibiti district, Coast region, the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) is organising a peaceful demonstration throughout the country to condemn such unlawful and inhuman acts.

According to a statement from the Coalition made available to The Guardian yesterday in Dar es Salaam, the peaceful demonstrations were planned to be held on the July 6, 2017 through the supervision of THRDC members in their respective regions.

“By a letter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Simon Sirro, which has been duly dispatched,  the Coalition has requested for protection and security during the event,” said THRDC National Coordinator Onesmo Olengurumwa in the statement.  

He added that the demonstrations were mainly to condemn publicly the unlawful killings of police officers and civilians.

“But also to raise awareness of the people on the importance of participating in the security of the nation in cooperation with the police force,” he said.

He urged the police force and the government to take strong measures against such unlawful acts in order to ensure peace and security of the nation.

Olengurumwa said the demonstrations aimed at notify those engaged in the brutal murders that their acts were both unlawful and reprehensible.
