Sumaye was admitted at the institute four days ago for heart related ailments. Doctors at the hospital assured President Magufuli that Sumaye’s condition is stable and improving.
The retired Premier seconded the doctor’s prognosis saying he is responding well to treatment and is expected to be discharged very soon.
Speaking soon after meeting the president, Sumaye thanked President Magufuli for his courtesy visit; “this shows how he (Magufuli) loves his people. This is true love he has shown,” admitted the former Premier who was also a key figure of opposition during last year’s elections
Before defecting to the lead opposition Chadema in last year’s elections, Sumaye was Member of Parliament for Hanang Constituency from 1983 to 2005 under the ruling CCM ticket. He also served in the Cabinet as Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Cooperatives and became Prime Minister from 1995 to 2005.
After leaving office, Sumaye was a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and subsequently, in 2006, he enrolled for a year as a mid-career student in the Edward S. Mason Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, earning a Master of Public Administration.
Sumaye unsuccessfully sought the ruling CCM's nomination as its presidential candidate last year after which he joined the opposition coalition UKAWA on 22 August 2015. In a speech he gave then, Sumaye said he was joining the opposition to strengthen it.
In a related development, President Magufuli also visited Mama Maria Nyerere and consoled her for the death of her in-law Leticia Nyerere who died in Maryland, USA where she went for treatment early this month.
A statement issued yesterday from the State House said President Magufuli visited Maria Nyerere’s home in Msasani to console her following the death of former Special Seats MP through Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA).
Leticia Nyerere died at Doctors Community Hospital in Lan ham, Maryland yesterday at two pm Eastern Africa time. Leticia, daughter in-law of the late Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, was married to Madaraka Nyerere and had three children.
