Dar archrivals revive league dominance

THE fifth round of the Mainland premier soccer league came to an end at the weekend as Simba Sports Club opened a three-point lead at the summit of the standings.

Simba’s industrious striker Ibrahim Ajib (R) negotiates his way past Azam defending duo of David Mwamtika (L) and Shomari Kapombe when the teams met during Mainland premier soccer league first leg at the Uhuru Stadium on Saturday. Simba won 1-0.

The Dar es Salaam side edged rivals Azam FC by a single goal that elevated them to the top of the standings with 13 points to their collection.

Simba are enjoying the lead over archrivals Young Africans who have, however, played one game less but with ten points to their collection.

Yanga have tied with Azam at the ten-point mark but the ice-cream makers have played one more game while having poor goal aggregate.

Yanga have not conceded a goal in their four appearances so far while pumping in eight of those to stay at the heels of leaders Simba.

The ice-cream makers who are searching for their second premiership title since gaining promotion into the top flight side during 2008/9 season, have been handed the first defeat of teh season on Saturday to slightly halt their otherwise title-winning campaign.

Of the 16 teams featuring in the league, only Simba and Young Africans remain unbeaten though they have both dropped two points so far.

While Yanga face Shinyanga-based Stand United in their subsequent league assignment, Simba are still at their Dares salaam base to host visiting Majimaji that are still searching for their first win of the season.

The Dar archrivals will play against each othyer in their first leg of the new season on October 1 at the National Stadium in the possible tussle for premiership dominance.

In related development Songea-based majimaji extended their winless streak to record fifth match after going down to visiting Ndanda at the Majimaji Stadium on Saturday.

The result has complicated the etam’s survival efforts early on as they stay at the base of the log without a point.
