Drivers gear up for Arushamotor rally

THE fourth leg of the national motor rally championship gets underway in Arusha on Saturday and competing drivers are on their way to the event.

Drivers from Dar es Salaam who have confirmed to feature in the event include TufailTufail, DharamPandya, RandeepBirdi and Jamil Khan.

Khan is leading the pack of the Tanzanian drivers in the race for national motorsport title sanctioned by the Automobile Association of Tanzania, AAT. He has collected 43 points edging Birdi by three as holder Pandya has 13 points to close the gap.

Khan has opened a narrow but useful three-point gap over highly charging Birdi with both drivers seeking to win their maiden national championship title.

Winner in the Oryx Energies Africa Rally Championship staged in Bagamoyo in June, Birdi is expected to stand firm finding his way to the podium.

However, the competition in Arusha is expected to be full or fireworks as host drivers who have huge route knowledge and familiarity pose big threat to visitors.

Veteran Gerald Miller, national championship title holder GurpalSandhu and the Kilimanjaro Motor Sports Club’s Dhani duo of Guljit and Gurpal are drivers to reckon with in the event as well.

The event is staged in dry season where roads are full of dust which will give spectators an entertainment while drivers have to struggle to overcome it.

Unlike other clubs, theArusha Motor Sports Club has been staging motor rallies without failure since its establishment in 1998 taking over from defunct Mount Meru Motor Sports Club. It’s the only club that stages two motor rallies in a given season, the other being Guru Nanak.
