EA Junior Athletics Championships set for this month's end

THE East and Central Africa Junior Athletics Championships (EAAR) will be held at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam at the end of this month, Athletics Tanzania (AT) announced yesterday.

Junior runners participate in the recent East and Central Africa Junior Athletics Championships which took place in Dar es Salaam.

The EAAR Championships were supposed to be held at the same venue last week but were postponed in the eleventh hour after the main sponsors, World Athletics (WA), had failed to release the money for the championships.

Jackson Ndaweka, AT secretary-general, said the EAAR Championships will be held from May 27-28 at the venue and one day later, there will be an EAAR executive committee meeting.

He said the championships will be held after WA had released the money for footing the championships' expenses and AT has started the process of communicating with EAAR member states on the new dates.

''It's now official that the EAAR Championships will be held on May 27-28 at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium," Ndaweka stated in his short message.

The dates coincidentally collide with the National Championships but, in the previous interview, Ndaweka said AT leadership will convene a meeting to discuss the new dates for the National Championships.

The AT official's statement suggested that the National Championships will probably be held a week after EAAR Championships.

Zanzibar Athletics Association (ZAAA) president Abulhakim Cosmas Chasama confirmed to have received communication from AT on the new dates for the EAAR Championships and said they will send athletes in both categories.

"Our counterparts (AT) have communicated to us that the EAAR Championships which were postponed last week will be held at end of this month,'' Chasama disclosed.

''AT has even sent us a message from EAAR showing that the sponsorship money has been released, we will send strong teams which are capable of winning medals," he said.
