Ngorongoro Half Marathon organizers increase prizes for athletes

THE first 1000 athletes in this year’s Ngorongoro Half Marathon, scheduled for April 20 in Karatu, will be presented with medals, the race’s organizers, Meta Petro Sports Promotion, have disclosed.

Athletes battle it out in a recent Ngorongoro Half Marathon in Arusha.

Meta Petro Sports Promotion’s director, Meta Petro disclosed the prize will be brought to the country in the next few days.

The half marathon that is held annually will start at the gate of Ngorongoro Crater and end at Mazingira Bora ground in Karatu Town. Participants run the full half marathon (14 miles) as individuals.

Petro said this year’s race will hopefully be extremely entertaining and will see an increase in prizes for winners, as opposed to the last year race.

The official noted this year’s race will involve many athletes from in and outside the country because of efforts by organizers to motivate participation in the race.

Petro pointed out race numbers for athletes that will run the full 21 kilometers will be sold at 20,000/- each, whereas race numbers for the 5km Fun Race and children’s event will be sold at 10,000/- and 5,000/- respectively.

He noted the organizers sought to present race numbers for children at 5,000/- each with a view to seeing to it the latter prepare well for the race.

The organizers, he insisted, aim at doing away with simply assembling a big group of children that have not prepared well for the race.

Petro disclosed over five schools in Arusha have confirmed to field over 100 children in this year’s race in which the runners will run 2.5 kilometers.

The official added they are looking forward to a big number of athletes in this year’s race, as well as a lot of fans, saying the fans will be treated to entertaining action.

He disclosed preparations for the race are moving on smoothly and organizers hope everything will be ready a few days before the race day.

Meta Sport Promotions, early this week, signed contract with the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority for backing this year’s race.
