Paralympics athlete secures fund for Rio

Tanzania Paralympics Committee (TPC) has secured sponsorship to send one athlete and three officials to Brazil for this year’s Paralympics Games.

Speaking yesterday, TPC acting secretary general Tuma Dandi said the association has managed to secure the money from undisclosed sponsor after the government declined to dish out 50m/- to the team for the Brazil trip.

TPC asked the government for the sum to send athlete Ignus Mtweve who will compete in shortput and discus, coach Zaharani Mwenyemti, president of the committee Gwakisa Mwakabeta, Secretary general Peter Sulungi and himself as a leader of delegation.

After a long wait for a response, the government through the Ministry for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports informed the committee that it has no money.

Dandi said the sourced money will help them to send the athlete, coach and leader of delegation.“We are really very happy that the country will be presented at the Games”, he said. The team is expected to leave the country for the Games early next month.

In the previous interview Dandi said the International Paralympics Committee (IPC) pledged to donate some money (token) to help national associations to prepare for the Games, but they have not received it.

He said Mtemve is training harder so as to realise his dream of winning a medal at the 2016 Rio Summer Paralympic Games.

“He is now in his final stages of the training. It is hard but worth it, he has invested a lot of money, energy, time and resources for his training, he has that burning desire of winning a medal at the Olympics and as TPC we are doing everything so that he can realize his dreams”, he said.
