Speaking yesterday, Mustafa Hassanali, the founder of Swahili Fashion Week, said there will be a lot of activities from December 6-8 at Serena Hotel and they expect many people to attend the event.
He said on the opening day of the event there will be humanitarian award, East African Designer of the Year award, Unilever Innovation Designer of the Year award and African Designer of the Year award.
Male Model of the Year, Hair Stylist of the Year, Female Stylist of the Year, Personality and Grey Goose Fashion Blog of the Year, are as well in the list of awards.
Hassanali said the award on Friday will be accompanied by exhibitions by Lundi and Sons, Tuntifiday Designs, AM Designs, Nishike Mkono Organizations, Nyanju and Ucoco of Burundi.
There will as well be exhibitions by Millyz, Neste Fashion Africa, Mahgumes Designs, Nucy of Sudan and Lucky Creations.
He further said on Saturday there will be awards for Washington Benbella Emerging Designers Competition, Khamis Upcoming Designer of the Year, Makeup Artist of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, Fashion Journalist of the Year, Dashing Diva East Africa Model of the Year and Male Stylist Personality of the Year.
The Saturday awards will be accompanied by exhibitions from United States of America (USA)-based Clavan Leonard, Chuwa Fashion, EN-AN-TK, Kinsunsi Designs, Mkwadule Son, Marry Angel Fashion House of Burundi, Samz, Lavra with Culture, Palse of South Africa, Marta Zampolini of Italy and Doreen Mashila of Zanzibar.
On Sunday, Hassanali said, there will be awards for Zakia Meghji Life Achievement of the Year, Accessory Designer of the Year, Women’s Wear Designer of the Year, Fashion Photographer of the Year, Hugo Domingo Stylist of the Year, Khimuis Men’s Wear Designer of the Year, Serena Designer of the Year (up country designers) and 361 Degrees Designer of the Year.
He also disclosed artists who will exhibit at the Sunday event include those working for Shahbaaz Sayed by Nida Textiles, Afrika Walla of Zambia, Nashaki House of Styles, Enofits, Samna Collections of Burundi, Bijoux Trendy, Samz, Kemi Kalikawe, Beryl Qouture of Uganda and Kiki Fashion Designer.
“All preparations for this year’s Swahili Fashion Week are going on well and we are happy that so far many artists have confirmed to showcase their designs and we expect it to be very good,” he said.
Mustafa also disclosed that they have this year added a new category, namely Designer of the Year which is for designers from upcountry areas.
He noted the inclusion of the new category gears towards encouraging and motivating designers based in upcountry.
This year’s edition of Swahili Fashion Week and Awards is organized by 361 Degrees and hosted by Serena Hotel.
Italy’s Embassy in Tanzania, Grey Goose, Hugo Domingo, Image Masters, Asilas Makeup, Green Telecom and other companies have backed the Swahili Fashion Week.
