This is one of the biggest athletics events in Tanzania and in the entire East Africa region and it comes along with a lot of excitement and colour. Security is one of the key issues while organizing and hosting such a big event one needs to have proper and reliable security as this is among issues that are currently raising great concern all over the world. Wild Frontiers, who are the main organizers of the marathon, left nothing to chance and once again worked with KK Security in conjunction with the Police Force. In December 2016 GardaWorld Protective Services purchased KK Security Group of Companies in order to have their foot print in Africa. The KK Security Group of Companies General Manager Arusha, Claude Herssens, said GardaWorld is the largest privately owned security company based in Montreal, Canada and employs over 80,000 personnel across the world and has a turnover of USDollars 4bn/- annually.  “GardaWorld brings with it a wealth of experience in armed and unarmed services across the globe and will provide KK Security Group of Companies with the backbone it requires in order to become a next generation Company preparing for expansion throughout Africa in the next decade,” he disclosed.  “These are exciting times for the security industry and KK Security is committed to provide its customers including the Kilimanjaro Premium Lager Marathon with the best partnership.”

He disclosed that they are now present in East and Central Africa (Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, and Mozambique).

KK Security’s history with the Kilimanjaro Premium Lager Marathon dates back to 11 years ago when the company first proudly sponsored it and has never looked back since then.

“Our mission statement is to provide safe and secure environments through honest engagements and respect for people and that is exactly what we are doing for Kilimanjaro Premium Lager Marathon as well,” he noted.

He said KKSTL works closely with the Regional Police Department to ensure their efforts provide the best possible security for the runners and their supporters during this prestigious annual event.

“Our security starts with advising the event organizers and ensuring we are working together as a team from the start to the end,” he disclosed.

Normally, according to Herssens, security is provided right from the start when the participants are signing up for the event, during the set up for the race, the actual race day and the post-race date.

He said they work with the police in ensuring all roads which are leading to the main road which the event is taking place are closed so as to ensure a maximum safety of the race participants. The organizers had more than 10 water tables for the marathon sponsors and KK Security ensured these water points were secured throughout the marathon.

“The security officers also participate in providing the runners with water and for the clean up after the race event to ensure due care is provided to the communities where the race was held,” he noted.

Inside the stadium, he pointed out they provide security through access control, CCTV monitoring, and wherever possible direct involvement with the organizers in the prize giving and assisting where possible.

Due to the complexity and size of the event, Herssens added they provide five mobile Response Vehicles with their respective teams, over 150 Security Officers to cover in different areas of responsibility and the senior and middle management which is involved in the organizational level of the international event.

“We ask the community to work with us as security starts with the good will of the surrounding communities ensuring that we have a successful event,” he said. Other sponsors of the Kilimanjaro Marathon 2019 include Kilimanjaro Premium Lager-42 km (Main Sponsor), Tigo-21km, Grand Malt 5km and water table sponsors Simba Cement, Keys Hotel, Kilimanjaro Water, TPC Sugar, AAR, Kibo Palace, Barclays Bank, Precision Air and CMC Automobiles.

This is the biggest marathon event in Tanzania so far that comprises the 42 km Full marathon, 21 km half marathon and the famous 5km Fun run.
