Simba, Azam start league campaign

The Mainland Premier League kicks off today at different venues with the main focus being matches of Simba and Azam FC.

Simba players train at Boko Veterans ground in Dar es Salaam.

Simba who last season finished third with 62 points, welcome Ndanda FC of Mtwara at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam while Azam, second places last season with 66 points, play newly-promoted African Lyon at the Chamazi Complex.

Simba go into the game with high hopes based on the quality of players which the team have recruited.

The Msimbazi side is expected to field newcomers such as Ramadhani Kichuya, Mussa Ndusha, Malika Ndeule, Methold Mwanjali, Mudhamir Yassin, Frederick Blagnon and Laudit Mavugo.

However, the team is likely to miss the services of Mavugo in the opening game because his International Transfer Certificate (ICT) is yet to arrive.

Simba assistant coach Jackson Mayanja said that the team was injury-free and that they were ready to take on the Mtwara side.

Simba defeated Ndanda FC 3-0 in their last premier league match played on March 10 at the National Stadium. The Msimbazi Street side also beat them 1-0 in the first leg match played at the Nangwanda Sijaona ground.

Azam FC host African Lyon after beating defending champions Young Africans SC 4-1 on penalty shootouts on Wednesday to clinch the Community Shield, in a Chamazi Complex encounter.

The ice-cream makers under their new coach Zeben Hernandez are expected to use their home ground well to stun the newcomers.

Elsewhere, Toto Africans entertain Mwadui FC at the CCM Kirumba Stadium while Stand United take on newly-promoted Mbao FC of Mwanza at the Kambarage Stadium in Shinyanga.

Mtibwa Sugar invite Ruvu Shooting at the Manungu Complex in Turiani while Majimaji play Prisons of Mbeya at the Majimaji grounds in Songea.

The league continues tomorrow when Kagera Sugar and Mbeya City lock horns at the Kambarage Stadium in Shinyanga.
