Simba fail to open points' gap in VPL

SIMBA wasted an opportunity to widen points' gap with their challengers in the Mainland Premier League have ended in vain as the team was held to a 1-1 draw by Lipuli FC at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Midfielder Mwinyi Kazimoto scored Simba's goal on the 14th minute and Lipuli FC drew level through Ghanaian center back, Asante Kwasi, five minutes later.

Much as Simba came out with a point, the team still enjoy the driver's seat with 23 points from 11 matches.

Lipuli FC occupies the seventh position with 14 points from 11 matches following the draw.

Simba took the game to their opponents from early on and Lipuli FC keeper, Agathon Anthony, displayed goalkeeping heroics to prevent his team from conceding.

The agile Lipuli Keeper made a fine diving save to frustrate Simba's winger, Shiza Kichuya, who had tested the former with a left foot attempt from outside the former's box.

Simba's Kichuya and John Bocco, as well, had two attempts that hit the posts as the team pressed for an early goal.

Midfielder, Kazimoto, drilled in the opener for Simba on the 14th minute, lobbing the ball over Lipuli's Anthony after the midfielder was released by fellow midfielder, Muzamiru Yassin.

Yassin had seen his good attempt from outside Lipuli's box fly a few inches over early on.

Lipuli defender, Kwasi, brought his team to level terms five minutes later through a well taken free kick almost 20 meters out.

Simba midfielder, Haruna, too wasted two good opportunities from inside Lipuli's area later on in the half.

Niyonzima and Kazimoto were rested early in the second 45 minutes for strikers, Laudit Mavugo and Nicholas Gyan in what was seen as an attempt by the hosts' technical bench to step up pursuit of a win.

Lipuli had an opportunity to make it 2-1 in their favour on the 70th minute after striker, Seif Abdallah was released in the opponents' area, only to see Simba's Yassin block the former.

Bocco also had a glorious chance a minute later as he was released inside Lipuli's area and had his attempt saved by Anthony.

The hosts went close after Gyan had tested Anthony with a powerful low right foot attempt and the latter pushed the ball away for a corner kick, which was cleared.

Anthony was shown yellow card by the game's referee for unnecessary time wasting during the closing stages of the match, as the former attempted to frustrate Simba's onslaught.

Simba kept on pressing for a win during the added on time and Lipuli needed good goalkeeping by Anthony to, eventually, post the draw.

Azam FC have an opportunity to wrestle the top spot from Simba as the former entertain Morogoro's Mtibwa Sugar at the Azam Complex in the city today.

Azam FC occupies the second position with 22 points and a win over Mtibwa Sugar will see the Dar es Salaam outfit will post 25 points and lead Simba by two points.
