Stage set for Mwanza beach volleyball

EFFORTS to intensify promotion of volleyball in Mwanza have got yet another boost as the region is expected to host the regional beach volleyball tournament on August 30.

Baptist volleyball club’s players (in red jerseys) defend against BoT Club during a friendly match at Kona ya Bwiru in Mwanza recently.

The Mwanza Regional Volleyball Association (Mwareva)-organised tournament, as disclosed by the association’s official, Honorati Mayunga, will involve men, women and junior outfits, with each of the teams fielding two players.

He said 13 outfits have already made themselves available for the tournament, which wil take place at the Furahisha grounds in Kirumba lakeside surburb.

“August 15 has been set as the deadline for all teams wishing to participate in the tournament and notify Mwareva of their availability,” Mayunga said, adding that each of the teams that will take part in the event will pay participation fee amounting to 50, 000/-.

The Mwanza regional volleyball body, as noted by Mayunga has set aside fabulous prizes for winners but he declined to unveil the prizes, insisting they will l be made public shortly before the commencement of the event.

“It is our hope the regional beach volleyball tournament will offer a better platform for Mwanza teams to prepare for the national version of the tournament,” Mayunga said.

The Mwareva official insisted that the association is now keen on seeing to it that players who will compete in the regional beach volleyball tournament and the rest of the association’s events are Mwanza residents.

He said Mwareva has targeted to ensure Mwanza’s representatives in the national beach volleyball tournament which will be held in Dar es Salaam excel.

The regional beach volleyball tournament comes hot on heels of this year’s regional volleyball league, which started on May 21 and ended at the end of last month.

The league, which brought together eight outfits that locked horns in men, women and junior events, ended with Bank of Tanzania (BoT) Club laying hands on the top honour in men and women categories.

The second position in the men and women categories was won by Magu, which then made up for its failure to emerge champion in the two events by winning the junior category.

BoT Club will, therefore, represent Mwanza in this year’s national volleyball club championship, which will be held in Coast Region from August 18 to 22.

Mwareva, as disclosed by Mayunga, is optimistic over Mwanza volleyball giants have already started preparations for the national club championship.
