Tanga Cement proud of Kili Marathon sponsorship   

THE just ended Kilimanjaro Premium Lager Marathon 2019 event attracted almost 10,000 runners and over 5,000 spectators hence making it one of the biggest athletics events in Tanzania and within the East Africa region, thanks to the commitment from various sponsors.

Among this year’s race sponsors is Tanga Cement Public Limited Company, which has been associated with the event since it started 17 years ago.

The company has backed the race through Simba Cement brand. The Tanga Cement Group Commercial Manager, Peet Brits, said the company draws its motivation for Kilimanjaro Marathon due to the fact that the marathon takes place at ‘The Home of Simba Cement’, as the venue, Moshi, falls under their north market, and it is treated as their home.  “We like Kili Marathon as this is a major sports event that Team Simba participates in. Our runners in this year’s marathon participated in the half marathon as well as fun run,” Brits disclosed. He said the Kilimanjaro Marathon is a fun and entertaining event for the Team Simba who, according to him, fielded 31 runners, of which 21 participated in half marathon and 10 in the fun run. 

Simba Cement runners also participated in a corporate challenge where sponsors bring in their teams to challenge one another.  

Corporate challenge team consisted of six Tanga Cement’s employees. 

“Water point has always been a busy point, and for this year, we dedicated 17 volunteers to serve and all were extremely busy. They were making sure runners do not pass through our water point without being served with water and soda,” he said.   Brits noted they have been using the Kilimanjaro Marathon to ensure brand visibility and also had a special tent where they engaged with the public and informed them more about their product.  He applauded other sponsors including Kilimanjaro Premium Lager-42 km (main sponsors), Tigo (21km), Grand Malt (5km) and water table sponsors KK Security, Keys Hotel, Kilimanjaro Water, TPC Sugar, AAR, Kibo Palace, Barclays Bank, Precision Air and CMC Automobiles.

According to the manager, Tanga Cement is well known for its high quality cement products which have made a significant contribution to various infrastructural developments in East African countries for many years.

The company’s products are used in construction of houses, schools, roads, bridges, dams, and other essential facilities for local communities. 

“Simba Cement brand products are manufactured using best-in-class equipment and processes that are carefully designed and controlled by a team of dedicated professionals,” he disclosed.

“The industrial performance of our cement products in its various applications are constantly monitored to maintain the highest standards of quality, consistency and strength.” 

Brits called on other co-sponsors to ensure they use Simba Cement.  Asked on the importance of sports and healthy living in general, Brits disclosed that at  Tanga Cement PLC, health and safety of the employees is paramount.

He noted that apart from engaging the Team Simba to Kilimanjaro Marathon, the company does various health programs on and off site.

“Apart from the annual medical check-up, there are various well-ness programs including eating healthy and normal exercise using the company gym.  All these contribute to the performance of the company,” he disclosed. He challenged other companies which are not part of the sponsors’ team, to join this well exciting athletics event that is so far the biggest in Tanzania.

This year’s event took place at the Moshi Cooperative University and saw Moshi town turn into a beehive of activities as there were participants and spectators from more than 50 different countries.
