Tigo Zonal Director-North, George Lugata, said in Dar es Salaam yesterday the move aims at avoiding last minute inconveniences.
“We received a lot of concerns last year and most of the participants suggested to us to come up with this option this year and we are indeed working on it once ready we will announce this to the public,” he said, adding that they are proud to sponsor the 21 km race for the third year running now.
He called on Tanzanians to register in large numbers to avoid last minute rush, insisting domestic athletes should aim at scooping all top 10 positions in the race and take home the 11m/- prize money Tigo has set aside this year.
Lugata said they will also use this year’s marathon to sensitize the public on conservation of Mount Kilimanjaro, which is a big tourist attraction that most Kili Marathon participants from all over the world pick interest in.
The official said they will also support the Amani Children Centre in Moshi by providing the centre with different facilities to enable it participate in the marathon.
GAPCO Tanzania Marketing Manager, Caroline Kakwezi, whose company sponsors the 10 km wheelchair and hand cycle race, said all was set for this year’s event and stressed on the marathon trials that have been organised by the Tanzania Paralympics Committee (TPC).
The trials, which will take place at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam on February 11, will produce participants for the 10km wheelchair and hand cycle race in the Kili Marathon.
“We will, through this exercise, get the participants from Dar es Salaam whom we will cater for their transport, accommodation and meals,” she said.
She added that they had to use the procedure because of many requests they received from people that want to participate.
She thanked their customers for supporting GAPCO for the last seven years of their sponsorship.
“It is through their support that we have been able to support the Kilimanjaro Marathon,” she said.
Other sponsors of the Kilimanjaro Marathon, which will be held on February 26, include Kilimanjaro Premium Lager and Grand Malt.
The event’s water table sponsors include KK Security, TPC Limited, FNB, Kibo Palace, Kilimanjaro Water, CMC Automobile, Rwandair, Keys Hotel and new sponsors, Anglo Gold Ashanti and KNAUF Gypsum.
