The riders started the tour in Dar es Salaam last week and reached Mwintongo Village in Butiama, Mara, on Wednesday to mark the commemoration of the death of the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere.
Gabriel Landa, one of the founders of the 'Twende Butiama' tour, who is also the race's director, said they had fruitful discussions with family members of the late Mwalimu Nyerere and Chief Japhet Wanzagi, which had them talking on a number of issues.
He said they talked on how to promote cycling, a sport which the late Mwalimu Nyerere loved.
"We had very fruitful discussion with members of Mwalimu Nyerere family and Chief Wanzagi, we talked on how to promote cycling in the country and also how to turn the 'Twende Butiama' tour into an international event, we also visited Mwalimu Nyerere Museum,'' he disclosed.
The tour was flagged off at Msasani in Dar es Salaam at Mwalimu Nyerere's residence by his sons, Burito and Makongoro, 10 days ago.
The two thanked the riders who were expected to cycle more than 1400 kilometers to reach Mwintongo Village in Butiama.
“We really thank you for starting this tour to Mwintongo, Butiama, it is not that easy but you are determined to finish the journey,'' Makongoro disclosed.
''Our late father loved cycling very much, when he was teaching at Pugu Secondary School, riding was his best and dependable means of transport.''
''It is healthy as it can protect people from serious non-communicable diseases.”
More than 170 riders were present at the flag-off but 73 managed to reach Mwintongo.
The tour was sponsored by SAS Logistics, Usangu Logistics, Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) and other companies and organizations.
Speaking on behalf of all sponsors, Salim Albusaidy from SAS Logistics hailed Mwalimu Nyerere family for giving them a warm welcome at Msasani and noted they were expecting the same treat in Mwintongo.
They passed through Morogoro, Dodoma, Singida, Shinyanga, Mwanza and arrived at Mwintongo, Butiama on Wednesday.
While at Mwintongo Village, they will carry out a number of social activities that include planting trees.
Godfrey Mhagama, the Tanzania Cycling Association (Chabata) Chairman, hailed the 'Twende Butiama' race organizers and SAS Logistics for the tour he described as successful.
The tour had, on top of honouring Mwalimu Nyerere, also served as a platform for the riders to gain experience.
