VPL golden boot race heats up as Bocco overtakes Dube

SIMBA SC striker, John Bocco, and Prince Dube of Azam FC continue their battle for the golden boot award in the 2020/21 Vodacom Premier League, with the season set to be completed this week.

The leading goal scorers have two games left to stake their claim for the prize in the 2020/21 season.

Both strikers were on a 14-goal tally before Simba SC took on Coastal Union in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.

Tanzania international, Bocco, moved to 15 goals in the top flight for this season – putting him one ahead of his competitor Dube from Zimbabwe in the golden boot standings.

Simba SC forward Chris Mugalu has continued to rise up the scoring charts since May when his club shifted focus from CAF Champions League where they exited at the quarterfinal stage to domestic campaign.

Mugalu took his tally to 13 goals when he scored against Coastal Union in the emphatic 2-0 victory that confirmed Simba's fourth consecutive league title.

The trio of Bocco, Dube and Mugalu has all scored in the most number of games-11 games each.

Meddie Kagere who has won the golden boot in the past two seasons is in fourth place with 11 goals to his name.

He has reached double figures in all his three seasons since he joined Simba from Kenyan giants Gor Mahia.

In fifth place, Meshack Mwamita (Gwambina FC), Yusuf Mhilu (Kagera Sugar), Luis Miquissone (Simba), Iddi Selemani (Azam FC) and Danny Lyanga (JKT Tanzania) all have nine goals to their name.

Clatous Chama (Simba), Yacouba Songne (Yanga), Seif Karihe (Dodoma Jiji FC), and Fully Zulu Maganga (Ruvu Shooting) have each collected eight goals so far this campaign.

Meanwhile Chama’s brilliant individual season has seen him go four clear at the top of the assists charts. He has been directly involved in 22  goals in the Premier League this season (eight goals, 14 assists), three more goals than any other player.

In second place is Miquissone who has 10 assists to his name.

The 11-month long campaign comes to a conclusion this week. Matchday 33 is scheduled for Thursday while Sunday sees the final matchday 34 take place.
