Wheelchair tennis team seeks to excel in World Team Cup Qualifiers

​​​​​​​NATIONAL wheelchair tennis team’s players, who left for Kenya on Wednesday to compete at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup Qualifiers, have said they are confident of performing well at the event .

Tanzania Tennis Association (TTA) chairman, Dennis Makoyi, mentioned players making the team as Novatus Temba, Juma Hamisi, Lucy Shirima and Rehema Seleman.

Experienced tennis coach, Riziki Salum, is heading the team.

Makoyi said based on history, Tanzania’s players are expected to excel at the World Team qualifying tournament.

“Yes, the players left yesterday (Wednesday) for Kenya where they will compete at BNP Paribas World Team Cup Qualifiers, they have all promised to do well at the event and I’m sure they will perform well,” he said.

He disclosed that the players and coach have been sponsored by International Tennis Federation (ITF)and TTA.

The country has in the past competed at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Turkey and Italy.

The BNP Paribas World Team Cup is the International Tennis Federation (ITF)'s flagship wheelchair tennis team event.

It is often referred to as the Davis Cup and Fed Cup of wheelchair tennis.

The initial event took place in California, USA in 1985 involving six men’s teams.

The women's competition began the following year, with quad and junior events being introduced in 1998 and 2000 respectively.
